People underestimate Poodles. Behind the fancy haircuts is the second-most intelligent dog breed in the world and a serious working retriever. The name comes from the German "pudeln", to splash, because they were originally water hunting dogs. Standards weigh 20-32 kg and stand over 38 cm. These aren't lap dogs.
But they do look incredible in a portrait.
Curls and Light
The Poodle coat is uniquely challenging and rewarding to render. Each curl catches light at a different angle, so the entire coat becomes this complex surface of tiny highlights and shadows. It's the opposite of painting a smooth-coated breed.
White and cream Poodles are particularly interesting because the coat becomes almost entirely about light. The "color" is really just warm and cool shadows playing across the curls. Silver and grey Poodles have a similar quality, metallic, shifting.
Black and red Poodles are more straightforward but no less striking. The deep black catches just enough light to read as dimensional, while the reds glow warm against darker backgrounds.
The Aristocratic Posture
Poodles hold themselves differently than other dogs. Upright, alert, almost theatrical. We don't have to art-direct the pose much, they naturally carry themselves in a way that suits an oil composition. Straight back, head up, a look that says "I know exactly what's happening."
Sizes
Standard, Miniature, or Toy, they all work. We adjust the composition to suit the size, but the essential Poodle character comes through regardless. Upload a photo at getnobly.com and see the free preview.
